Annie Wu, A Baltimore-Based Graphic Designer definitely makes my list of awesone illustrations in a non-comic book role. Damn son. I’d love to see her do comics more often or even band posters.

I can’t say I found this on my own either. Thank god for Warren Ellis putting this up on his fantastic blog of awesome.

Pokestadium has a fun little trainer generator that lets you make your own pokemon trainer card complete with your favorite creatures and what you would look like in the PokeVerse.

Best Part of Recess? Hustler Kid.

Recess may have been the only good part of ABC’s One Saturday Morning but the best part of the show was the Hustler Kid.

Yes, the Hustler kid. The recess repo-man, the playtime pimp, the drug pusher of the fourth grade. The fact that the makers of this show thought it prudent to add a childhood character that reminds grown-ups of their own pushers of illegal pleasures not only makes this character so flipping lifelike, but also loveable.

Down to his fake 1930’s New York accent.

Rad.

Hustler Kid was the person I wished I could have been on the playground, instead I was more like Swing Girl…but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

You can't fight the numbers

GI Joe was a staple of my childhood. As pointed out on this blog before, nothing came close to the explosions and truly satisfying destruction of a Cobra base with a jolly “YO JOE” capped on at the end for good measure. Favorite Joes include Dusty, Snake Eyes, Cross Country, Lady Jay and Flint.

Favorite Cobra villains were, and will always be, The Crimson Twins (aka Tomax and Xamot) not

Fact: Identical twins are scary AND mostly likely agents of Cobra

only because of their flamboyantly evil costumes but also because of that weird voice that the actors on the show implemented to make them seem like villainous gymnasts from the country of auto-tune. Plus their names are mirrior images of each other (yes it took me 20 years to realize that) so that’s pretty awesome too.

GI Joe, while rooted in the Regan-era Military-Industrial Complex and, on some level, an agent for Pro-American leanings during the Cold War is still one of the classic cartoons from the 1980s and I am proud to have been one of the lucky kids who got to see the tv show and the comic book during it’s heyday.

GI Joe, Transformers, and the like all were apart of the Golden Age of American television, an era that has not been topped since. Hollywood has proved this point by leeching off of the ideas of their 80’s counterparts to make blockbuster movies out of childhood memories. While I have yet to see the new GI Joe movie, I am more inclined to see it over Transformers since it lacks the bemoaning of Shiloh LeBouf, I am still wary of what kind of mind-raping it might incur in the form of a Wayans Brother portraying a GI Joe.

When I do get a chance to see the movie, and even if it crushes my memories of a more simpler time, at least now I’ll know…and knowing is half the battle.

Neil Patrick Harris- Singing Evil Doer once again

It’s no secret that Neil Patrick Harris is my one true man-crush. Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog and How I Met Your Mother Season 1 have both taken up permanent residence on my backup computer and will be apart of any restore I ever have to do to the aging machine.

With that said, Neil Patrick Harris has once again knocked it out of the musical ballpark with a cameo on Batman The Brave and the Bold as the villainous Music Meister.

Kinda looks like NPH too...

The Music Meiser is the newest villain to attack Batman and Co. With the ability to hypnotize anyone into doing his bidding via his singing, the Meiser makes it his mission to become the king of both Broadway and crime. He’s definitely got the multiple-costume changes down for the job but can he outdo “The Bat” on the grandest of stages?

Did I mention he makes Batman sing in this episode? Yes, he makes Batman sing.

He uses a Batman Auto-Tuner. No Joke.

In this musical episode, everyone from Green Arrow to Black Canary sings and joins in the fight to defeat the evil Music Meiser. Its magical, and probably the only way I could ever see Aquaman dance like a pretty princess.

This, by far, is the greatest tribute to GI JOE ever.

Magical. Between Chuck Lidell as Gung-Ho, Henry Rollins as Duke, Sgt. Slaughter as Himself, Alexis Bledel as Lady Jaye, and Olivia Wylde as Baroness…this…no words…just so damn good…soo many people in this masterpiece.

All I got to say is Good Job Funny or Die crew, and, YO JOE!

Beatles Rockband just came out and all I can say is turn off your mind, relax and float down stream.

It looks awesome, it sounds great, and while not completely innovative it will be one of the best games to play this year. Sharp looking images, traveling through the whole history of the Beatles. Amazing.

It's all right...

Planning on having at Beatles Rockband party at the haus over the weekend. We plan on taking the whole “pretending to be the Beatles” a little too far too.

Four people start the game totally cool with one and other and by the end one of us is a primadonna, one has a weird girlfriend, and the others are just fed up with the whole experience. Should be good times, and for the most part, we won’t have to try with the lyrics, most of them have been hardwired into our brains at the age of 12.

Thank God for Rockband making this game- it’s sure better than what Guitar Hero was making.

Just bought the URL, http://witgeek.com, on WordPress. Now I like so many before me can posts pictures of their cats photoshopped with captions while still gaining the top search result on Google for “Vidya Games”

Truth.

Anyway. Onto other news.

For those of you looking into graduate programs this time of year instead of looking into employment, online applications are the greatest invention since the creation of fire. Not only does it make it easier to compile, sort, and hand in your application to the school of your choice but it makes it easier to be laughed at and belittled by the school and academic department of your choice. Awesome!

But really, applying to graduate school is now easier than sin. Anyone who is not applying to school because “the applications are wayyy too convoluted,” or because, “the applications are too expensive.” Hogwash I say!

Sure, it still costs a crap load to send in your application to the school of your choice, but now you save postage AND even recommendations are as easy as an email to your reccomender/undergraduate advisor.

Graduate school, while always accessable, has now become readily available to anyone with a broadband connection and a hatred of human interaction. Good times, back to applying to Fordham and Syracuse.

Comic Book Learnin’ 101

I was recently asked what I would want to teach for a college class, if given the chance, by a friend of mine out of the blue.

“I guess,” I said, “if given free reign…”

Taking an idea out of Mr. McCloud's playbook...

“You’re given complete and total control, like,

tenure +10″

“‘Probably comic books.”

“Oh, awesome. What would be on the reading list?”

“What would be on the reading list?” I asked myself this very question for the next few days, nagging the hell out of my subconscious on every occasion. I knew that I didn’t want the reading list to be made up entirely of Superhero books and at the same time I didn’t want to single out Graphic Novels as the only “poignant” storytelling method for comic book writers since many one-shots in comics have helped to be as influential on the genre as a whole as well.

I would want the students in the class to read ten mandatory books that would guide my lectures and pick six books from a possible list of 16 for essay responses and a final paper at the end of the semester. It seems like a lot of reading, I know, but most of the books on the list barely break 100 pages. So really its just as much reading, and expenses, as any other literature class at a four-year college.

After careful consideration and thought, I thought the fictional “reading list” for a fictional class would go as follows after the cut:
